Ubuntu linux is the best alternative for windows and its my favourite linux distros and even to many.It provides the graphical yet simple user interface and provides easy navigation through menus,its ultimate for beginners to start with ubuntu.Ubuntu packages(softwares) are based on debian linux.So it supports only debian packages(it usually have an extension .deb).

The following are the list of steps for installing the vital packages in ubuntu and their brief descriptions.
Any of the following ways can be used to install packages:
1.Go to terminal(Applications->Accessories->Terminal) then type
SUDO APT-GET INSTALL PACKAGE NAME
OR
2.USE SYNAPTIC PACKAGE MANAGER(It can be found by navigating through
Applications->ubuntu software resources(Add or remove programs in older versions) ).
FIRESTARTER-firewall for ubuntu.
PYSDM-Used to automount the hard drives.
SKYPE-voip client
KTORRENT-Bittorrent client for ubuntu.Although Transmission (package) shipped with ubuntu is engough,ktorrent provides additional features.
WINE-Windows emulator, windows based softwares can be run through this emulator.

AUDACITY-open source sound editor tool
